Must Take With You When Traveling:
OM System Zuiko 12-100 mm f/4 IS PRO

The most difficult aspect of travel photography is encountering a different photographic subject under different conditions at every moment. In addition to the difficulties of traveling, many decisions regarding photography need to be made quickly. Choosing the right lens to create the most impressive composition is also an important decision, along with preferences such as light measurement, White Balance, shutter speed and aperture. Therefore, using a zoom lens while traveling can be a great advantage. A zoom lens with an open aperture and a wide range will help us get through almost any subject with flying colors.

Re-introduced in March 2024 , OM System 12-100 mm f/4 IS Pro, one of the newest members of the Zuiko Pro family of professional class lenses, is a lens that will ensure successful results on every trip.

Sharpness
It is a known fact that sharpness can be problematic with wide-range zoom lenses. The OM System 12-100mm lens is an extremely sharp lens. Laboratory tests showed that there was little change in sharpness in the center compared to the corners. In these tests, when the lens is used at 100 mm at f/4, a slight softness in the corners is noticeable. However, when the aperture is used as 5.6, the sharpness in the corners also increases.

Chromatic Aberration
As we saw with the OM System 12-40mm f/2.8 II Pro, the amount of chromatic aberration varied slightly depending on focal length. Although some chromatic aberrations appear with the f / range between 12 and 25 mm on the 12-100 f / 4 IS Pro lens, chromatic aberrations disappear as the focal length increases and the aperture becomes redder.

Vignetting
In laboratory tests, vignetting is very rare. For most focal lengths other than 12mm and 100mm, vignetting is quite low, below 0.25EV across the entire aperture range of the lens. Considering the wide-angle focal length, it's not unexpected to see some vignetting. 12-100mm, 0.5EV at f/4 shows some light falloff in the corners, and this darkening decreases at low apertures like f/11. Naturally, when the lens is used as 12 mm, vignetting is more visible.

Auto Focus
The OM SYSTEM 12-100mm f/4 IS Pro offers very fast autofocus with both OM System' contrast-detection cameras and hybrid PDAF models such as the new OM-1. The electric AF system is super fast, taking from minimum to infinity focus in under a second. Autofocus feels almost instantaneous on both the wide-angle and full-tele lens. Like the latest OM lenses, the new 12-100mm f/4 IS Pro features OM System' MSC focusing system. This system operates silently in continuous AF mode for both stills and video. The OM System 12-100mm f/4 IS Pro focuses quickly, smoothly and very quietly. Manual focus is also possible, with both manual focus and full manual focus, and full-time manual focus override when AF is active. When using OM System cameras, you can set the camera to “S-AF + MF” and half-press the shutter button to achieve AF, while rotating the focus ring and adjusting manual focus settings.

Macro
Although not designed for true 1:1 macro photography, the OM System 12-100mm offers some pretty impressive close focusing capabilities, with a minimum focusing distance of just 0.15m and a maximum shooting magnification of 0.6 x (35mm equivalent).

Image Stabilization
When it comes to shooting in low-light environments while traveling, it becomes important to cope with low shutter speeds. The 12-100mm is the second Zuiko Pro lens to offer built-in optical image stabilization, after the 300mm f/4 IS Pro. When the 12-100mm f/4 IS Pro is paired with the OM-1 Mark I, this “Sync I.S.” It uses 5-axis anti-shake. This gives you the opportunity to use shutter speeds as low as 8 stops.

Quality
As with other Zuiko Pro lenses, the new OM System 12-100mm lens is built to very high standards, with the same stylish, black metal construction and robust weather sealing. Like its other Pro siblings, the 12-100mm is completely splash-, dust-, and freeze-proof. However, it is not completely submerged in water. In terms of its optical structure, the M.Zuiko 12-100mm consists of 17 elements in 11 groups, including 1 Double Sided Aspherical, 3 aspherical, 5 ED lenses, 1 High Refractive Index element and 2 Super High Refractive Index elements. The lens also features OM System' advanced nanoparticle lens coating technology, "Z Coating Nano," which helps reduce ghosting and flare. Like other Zuiko Pro lenses, the 12-100mm offers a programmable “L-Fn” button next to the left-side lens mount. This Lens Function button can be configured using compatible OM System cameras to set various options, as well as options not related to the lens itself. Above the L-Fn button, the 12-100mm also includes an On/Off switch for Image Stabilization.

Conclusion
If you shoot with the Micro Four Thirds system and perhaps want a premium single-lens setup for traveling, hiking, or simply keeping the weight of your camera bag to a minimum, the 12-100mm f/4 IS Pro lens is the lens you're looking for with its versatility and quality.
